Bowling Rules and Regulations 2018-2019

“Rules and Regulations” is a living document and will be updated by the Bowling Chairperson if and when required. All proposed changes will require the approval of a majority of the team captains before they take effect.

General

At present there are 24 teams, split into 2 leagues; The American League and The National League.

The season will take place over 29 weeks, consisting of 23 weeks of regular bowling and 6 position rounds

The schedule is split into two halves, Weeks 1-15 and Weeks 16-29. At the mid-point of the season, team points will be reset to 0, but individual statistics will not.

Starting position for matches will be as scheduled. The first noted team will start on odd numbered lanes

Overall schedule is set by the Bowling Chairperson

Individual team schedules are based on team number. Team number is based on previous season’s point totals. For example, if your team finished the season with the highest point total, you would be Team #1, conversely if you finished the season with the lowest point total you would be Team #24

Bowling starts at 8:15 sharp. Practice balls must be bowled prior to 8:15.

Late bowlers must arrive, ready to bowl, before both anchors (5th bowler) have bowled the 3rd frame of that game in order to catch up. This rule can be waived on agreement of both Captains/teams

At the end of the season, a playoff will take place in which the Club Champions will be decided

The League is a HANDICAP LEAGUE and based on a handicap of 0.85% of 950 (Team handicap)

Each team will bowl ONCE per week, Tuesday through Friday.

Team standings are based on a point system: 2 points for each game won, 1 point for a tied game/total wood, and 0.5 points for tied wood (total pins)

If a team cannot field any bowlers on a given night, they will be automatically assessed a FORFEIT and will automatically receive 0 points for each game. The other team will be required to bowl against THEIR OWN average

If your opponent does not show up, your team will be required to bowl against your total team average and you will be awarded points based on how many games you bowl over your average. Over your average is defined as: For EACH game you must bowl greater than or equal to your total team average MINUS 50 pins to win the 2 points. Normal rules apply for the wood; if your team has a total pin count that is greater than or equals 3 x your team average minus 50 pins, you win the wood. A modified absent bowler rule will apply in the event that one or more of your bowlers does not show up; for each absent bowler subtract 5 pins from your total pin count minus 50 pins for each game bowled. This adjusted total will be used when calculating games won and wood. This applies during regular season, position rounds, wild card race, and playoffs.

The Bowling Chairperson may cancel bowling due to inclement weather or other reasons. If the Bowling Chairperson cancels bowling, the game(s) must be bowled before the following Monday. If the Chairperson has cancelled bowling, it does not matter if you show up. Bowlers must check with their respective Captains for verification of cancellation.

Captains must provide daytime contact information at the beginning of the season for the Captain and a Co-Captain

Membership Fees and Bowling Dues

All bowlers should be paid up members of the Commonwealth Club. Membership fees are $450 per year and are required to be paid in full by January 1st, 2019. Members in good standing can pay half by September 6th and half in December. A $25 discount has been approved if paid on or before September 6th, 2018. All dues must be paid by 1st January 2019 or membership will be dropped and member will have to reapply for membership. No exceptions unless approved by the Treasurer.

You are encouraged to pre-pay your bowling fees. The bowling fees are $400 ($10/week for 30 weeks plus $100 entry fee). Regardless of the number of bowlers in a team, each team has a liability of $2,000 per year. All bowling fees must be paid in full by 1st April 2019 or all bowling privileges will be revoked, including participation in playoffs.

Locker fees are due in September 2018. Large lockers are $25 and small lockers $10.

Full-time bowlers are responsible for their fees whether they bowl or not, except in cases where bowler is medically unable to bowl.

Substitute fees are left to each team to decide on the manner of payment.

Playoffs

16 teams qualify for the playoffs

8 from the American League and 8 from the National League

Teams from each league will be seeded 1 through 8

Seeds #1 and #2 in each league will be the winners of the first half and second half. Team with highest total points for the season will be seeded #1

Seeds #1 and #2 earn a double bye. Should the same team win the first and second halves, the team in that league with the next highest total points qualifies as second seed.

Seeds # 3 through #7 will be the remaining top 5 teams in each league based on total points won for the entire season. (Ties will be decided by TOTAL PINS WITH HANDICAP)

Seeds #3 and #4 will earn a single bye

The #8 seed for each league will be a wild card

The Wild Card will be decided between teams 8 through 13 from each league at the end of the regular bowling season. It will be based on the best record (total points won during the last 4 weeks of regular bowling). Bye weeks do not count. If a team forfeits during the final 4 weeks, their opponent must bowl against their average. Ties will be based on TOTAL PINS WITH HANDICAP

Playoff eligibility: To be eligible to bowl in the playoffs, a bowler must have bowled a minimum of 18 games for their team (includes subs).

Subs can only bowl for one team during the playoffs

An update of current playoff positions will be posted on a weekly basis, starting from Week 25

Handicaps and Averages

The league is a HANDICAP league and each player will be assessed a handicap (85% 0f 190) throughout the season which will be used in the Team Handicap (85% of 950) calculation

Individual bowlers handicap is based on the following calculation. (190-Average) x 0.85. For example, if a A-hole#1 has an average of 160, his handicap would be (190-160) x 0.85 = 26 (25.5)

Team Handicap is based on the following calculation [950-(total average of 5 bowlers)] x 0.85. For example: Team A-Hole consists of 5 bowlers with the following averages, A-Hole#1: 143, A-Hole#2: 150, A-Hole#3: 152, A-Hole#4: 159, A-Hole#5: 171. Total of all averages = 775. Team handicap would = (950-775) x 0.85 = 149

Note: In above calculations, the final result was rounded up. The bowling program that we use does not always round up, so there could be minor differences when using manual calculations (usually when adjustments have to be made for absent bowlers and sub usage)

Averages (New Bowlers). New bowlers will be awarded an average once they have bowled 3 games (on one night). Their average will be recalculated every week based on performance

Averages (Returning bowlers). Returning bowlers will use their average from the previous season for the first 9 games bowled. Their average will then be recalculated based on total pins bowled during those 9 games and will be recalculated thereafter on a weekly basis based on performance

Any bowler returning after an absence of a year or more must re-establish their average as per a new bowler

Bowling against your average: If a team has a total average of 775, your total pins for each game must be greater than 775 pins in order to win the points. In order to win total wood, total pins must be higher than 3 times the team average. Normal point distribution applies.

Teams, Bowlers, and Subs

Each team consists of 5 bowlers plus subs. Only a total of 5 bowlers may bowl for the team on any given evening.

Subs may only bowl once per week

Team Captains are responsible for tracking sub usage and payment of dues by sub

If a team only has 4 full-time bowlers, the team will be awarded a “Vacancy Bowler”. Every effort must be made to find a fifth full-time bowler, especially at the beginning of the season when new bowlers may be available. Each team is allowed a maximum of ONE VACANCY BOWLER. No exceptions. Bowlers may be added at any point during the season.

Vacancy bowlers are awarded an average of 145 pins (do not deduct 5 pins)

If an individual bowler cannot bowl on a given evening or misses any of the games on that evening, he will be marked as an Absent Bowler and score sheet will be amended as required. Every effort should be made to contact a substitute to replace the absent bowler.

For Absent Bowlers, 5 pins will be automatically deducted from their posted average per game missed.

Upon notification to both the Bowling Chairperson and the Treasurer in writing (email) that a team member is medically unable to bowl, effective the next week, the team will replace said bowler with a blind (Vacancy). The medically excused bowler must be out a minimum of four weeks and will not be held accountable for bowling dues during this period

Awards

The Club will award $500 for any 300 game rolled in league competition

To be eligible for any of the three high average awards, a bowler must bowl at least 75% of his team’ s games and six of the last nine games of the season

To be eligible for any of the other awards, a bowler must bowl at least 75% 0f his team’s games

Each team will receive a minimum of 50 cents per point won over the course of a full season

Perfect attendance means all completed scheduled games rolled, with the exception of bye weeks

Etiquette

League bowling starts at 8:15 p.m. Get to the club on time. It is an inconvenience to both teams’ members to have to wait while some late bowler “catches up” one, two or three frames.

Be attentive and ready for your turn to bowl. It becomes exasperating when a bowler has to be hunted down constantly to take his turn. It also makes for a long night.

Do not step up on an approach or retrieve your ball from the return when another bowler is ready to roll on an immediately adjacent lane.

Do not linger on the approach after bowling.

In the spirit of sportsmanship, do not make comments to a bowler when he is on the approach and ready to deliver his ball.

Do not place any drink container on the scorer’s table. It is likely to get knocked over. Similarly, be mindful of not spilling, since a wet shoe could prove disastrous when it sticks on the approach.

Smoking is allowed only in our bars. Make sure the exhaust fan is on. The switch is under the small TV in the alley bar.

The last two teams to leave the alleys have the responsibility to make sure everything is turned off. Paramount are the pin-setters; leaving them on all night can inflict serious damage. Hand blowers, fans, lights, smoke-eater, televisions, and the air conditioner in the wall adjacent to Lane 1 also get turned off. To let any of these run overnight is massively wasteful and a potential fire hazard
